#1:  Love language – acts of service

The traditional Chinese character ‘love’ shows a hand on top reaching in for someone’s heart through a roof (the metaphoric barrier we all keep around our hearts, for fear of getting hurt). The recipient feels the love and shakes hands with the giver.  Two people become friends.

Isn’t the meaning of love in Chinese beautiful? Share the meaning of love in Chinese with those who care for you and whom you care for. Offer this as an act of service.

#2:  Love language – words of affirmation

In the children’s book ‘Mom, I Like You the Most’《最喜欢妈妈》, the author adopts the tone of a little boy to show how words of affirmation make our love tender. Click the video to listen to this gentle story ‘Mom, I Like You the Most’ read-aloud in Chinese.

#3:  Love language – appreciation

‘Only Mom is the Best in the World’ (世上只有妈妈好) is one of the most famous songs about a mother’s love in the Chinese-speaking world. Listen to this beautiful song sung by a six-year-old Chinese girl. Click the resource pack to get the lyrics in English and Pinyin to sing along.

#4:  Love language – food

Food is the most common way to show love in Chinese culture. In this short Disney/Pixar animation ‘Bao’, a Canadian-Chinese woman becomes a mom again when a steamed bun (bao) she made comes to life as a boy. She pours out her love by making numerous food feasts!

#5:  Love language – quality time

Another wonderful way to share love is to spend quality time with our moms. Watch this YouTube tutorial on how to make the cutest baos/buns in the kitchen, something fun to try at home. Click the resource pack to get the ingredients needed to make a piggy bao/bun.

#6:  Love language – sacrifice

‘Hi Mom’ is a light-hearted modern Chinese comedy. In the movie, a university student is suddenly transported back 20 years to where she meets her young mother.

The two quickly become inseparable, like best friends. They make sacrifices for each other, as a manifestation of love valued in Chinese culture. 

#7:  Love language – gift
